Nova Vale Nova Vale Founder & Art Director

Wallpaper Unicorn is a small independent site run by Nova Vale, a web builder with a soft spot for good-looking screens. It publishes original wallpapers for phones and computers, free to download, in English and Spanish.

There is no company behind it. One person plans the collections, decides which designs go live and reads the messages that come in through the contact form.

How the wallpapers are made

Each collection starts as a written art direction that sets the palette, the mood and what has to stay out of the picture. The designs are then made from that brief with digital image tools, and every one of them exists twice. The phone file is 1024 by 1536 pixels and the desktop file is 1536 by 1024, composed separately, so the wide version is never just the tall one cropped down.

Lettering gets its own treatment. On the Bible verse wallpapers the background is made with no text at all and the verse is typeset on top afterwards, in English from the King James Version and in Spanish from Reina-Valera. That way no image tool ever gets a chance to misspell scripture. The short description under each card is written after looking at the finished image, so it tells you about that design and not about the collection in general.

What you will and won't find

You'll find collections sorted three ways: by aesthetic (cute, dark, Y2K, kawaii and more), by color, and by theme or season. You won't find accounts, paywalls or watermarks. Nothing is copied from Pinterest boards or other wallpaper sites, and nothing is sold. The site is paid for by advertising, which the privacy policy explains.

Who is this site for?

Anyone who changes their phone background more than once a year. Students, people who match their screen to the season, people who want a verse or a short line on the lock screen. The wallpapers are free for personal use under the licensing policy, and if you can't set one up, the step-by-step guide covers iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac.

The designs are also on Pinterest, YouTube and Pixabay, linked at the bottom of every page. If there's an aesthetic you can't find here, ask for it through the contact page.
